Morgan Martens, 15, was born into a mushing family and found himself frequently on a dog sled. Morgan, last year’s Jr. Iditarod champion, also ran the Jr. Beargrease, the Apostle Island Sled Dog Race, Northern Pines Race and and the Gunflint Mail Run. His family lives on a farm 35 miles from the nearest town. They have horses that they ride and drive. All summer, he and his sister chop and sell bundled firewood to help pay for the dog expenses and save for college. We love camping on the south shore of Lake Superior. I am honored to be chosen again to run Ryan Redington’s dog team in the Jr. Iditarod, and I am very involved in training these dogs. The dogs and I have a good relationship after spending many hours training together. Morgan enjoys choir, cross country, track, basketball, 4H, church youth group, fishing, hunting, camping, horseback riding, skiing and wood work. Following high school graduation, he plans to go to college and possbily own a business and he will keep mushing dogs.
