Fawn Wilson, 17, says she started mushing when she was 13. She became “enthralled with the sport” after reading Jack London’s The Call of the Wild when she was nine. She says, “Probably most interesting is that I come from Indiana, a place known for corn and basketball” not sled dogs. It was a challenge learning this sport virtually on my own, isolated from other mushers. (I think we are the only ones in my state.) But I’ve had a lot of mentoring from long distance with some Iditarod mushers and am now very fortunate to have gained a training position with Mitch Seavey, and his family. Without their belief in me and their guidance, this opportunity to come away from cornfields to Alaska would not have happened. I am eternally grateful. If all goes well and I finish the race, I will be the first person from Indiana , the first Hoosier, to compete in Alaska’s Jr. Iditarod.? Fawn has raced sprint races in Michigan and has always finished in the top ten. She attends Hamilton Heights High School in Cicero, Indiana, where she is a junior. She says she does a lot of 4-H, rides horses, enjoys photography, riflery and showing her dogs in agility. She hopes to attend the University of Alaska and study wildlife conservation or something connected with the global climate change. She emphatically says she will continue mushing.
