Katherine Manderfield, 17, says mushing runs in her family. She says, “My sister has been mushing since I was a baby. Four years ago she got me addicted to racing.? Her parents, no retired mushers, organized a dog race in Calumet, Michigan, when she was a baby, the Calumet Copper Classic. She and her sister now own and race the dogs from their kennel. Katherine is homeschooled in the eleventh grace. She participates in art and mushing in her school and also enjoys writing, drawing, reading, snowshoeing, go-carting, and hanging out with friends. When asked about plans beyond high school, she says, “Dog massage therapy sounds interesting.” She says she will continue mushing forever!
