Annika Olesen
Yellowknife, NWT, CANADA
Annika OlesenAnnika Olesen, 15, has grown up around dogs. Her dad, Dave Oleson is a veteran of eight Iditarods and her mom has run the Beargrease three times. The family has lived on a remote homestead on the east side of Great Slave Lake in the North West Territories for 23 years and Annika has spent her life “calling this place home.” She says she received her first dog for her sixth birthday. The family have 35 Alaskan Huskies, three barn cats and she hopes to someday to have a couple of horses. Annika is homeschooled and in the ninth grade. She says she doesn’t participate in any activities officially as part of school but they joke that mushing is her physical education. She says she loves horseback riding whenever she can, practicing basketball, collecting cool rocks, reading and swimming. She wants to go to college after which she would like to travel and work with race horses, and she says, “of course I will continue mushing.” “I have been dreaming about running the Jr. Iditarod and someday the Iditarod, as long as I can remember,” Annika says. This will be her race other than trying out for the Arctic Winter Games dog mushing.
